When the spread of Covid-19 turned the world upside down in 2020, Nepalese also quickly adjusted to the new, socially distanced world. Today, mobile payment apps are rapidly becoming the preferred option for consumers all over Nepal to pay for goods and services. However, with anything good that arrives, there is always a piece of bad that follows; as is the case for digitalization. The popularity of digital payments has also increased the risk of unaware users being targeted by fraudsters and scam artists who abuse these apps for their illegal schemes. But, we must not panic, we must learn because the best line of defense is awareness.

Payment gateways like digital wallets in Nepal provide users with a wide range of payment services; they allow you to transfer money to any mobile number, or send and receive remittance online, users can even easily make utility payments on these digital wallet apps. Digital Wallet apps are powerhouses in the palm of your hands.

The digital wallet industry in Nepal is thriving amidst the pandemic, due to the safety precautions we all must take to minimize the risk of the Covid-19 virus. Digital wallet companies are dedicated to finding ways to continually improve the ease, convenience, and security for the users. However, as quick, convenient, and secure as these companies try to make their systems, there is always a risk of misuse by fraudsters; these are predators who may abuse the lack of awareness in our users.

Digital Payment fraud is any type of false or illegal transaction completed by a cybercriminal. These fraudsters can trick you into giving up sensitive information or private financial data and steal your money without your knowledge. Imagine if you left your purse at a public place and someone finds it. Let’s say a few genuine people would help you get it back, but mostly that unknown person will empty your purse, right? It’s the same if you share your Password, Pin, OTP, CVV, etc., and other crucial information with anyone. Digital fraudsters can use various measures and tactics to lure you into their trap. It's up to you to maintain necessary precautions to keep your money and information secure, and your wallet safe.

All you need to know about Digital Scams

Here’s a look at some of the ways these scammers can steal your money from digital platforms:

Asking for your OTP, Password, PIN, CVV number.

Asking to send money for payment through social networks/ Online delivery for your online purchases and then not delivering the goods. So we need to be very careful while sending money to unknown numbers.

Claiming you’ve won Lottery/bonus/Contest through fake Viber, WhatsApp, SMS channels. Asking to deposit tax amount or certain deposit in Bank account or asking to remit the money.

Use your personal documents and create a fake account with your name and details.

So are digital payment platforms safe to use? Yes, indeed, if used properly and securely.

What not to do?

If you are using the digital wallet platforms for payment, here are some of the tips of the things you must never do:

Never share your Password, Pin, OTP, CVV, etc. with anyone, not even if the person says they’re calling from the digital wallet company. Representatives will never contact you to ask for your confidential information.

Never share your sensitive information on unknown social media pages/sites or through mail/SMS. Scammers might misuse your personal details to create fake accounts in your name.

Before sending money to any mobile number or domestic remittance, if you are unsure, always confirm by calling the person if it is their genuine mobile number.

Don’t click on any SMS, suspicious email/site links offering cashback unless it’s from an official channel.

Be careful while sending money to Social networks, online product or service purchases. Make confirmation of the official wallet number before sending money in such cases.

If you’ve become a victim of fraud, what to do next?

Kindly report possible cases of cyber-crime as soon as possible to your local police station.

Report financial irregularities in your account to the respective company.

Stay alert of financial fraud arising from phishing & vishing attacks.

In case you lose your phone, immediately call the customer service of your digital wallet.

Remember, your data is your power, and it needs to be protected!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5892376448157171714.post-79567554425218203452019-04-16T12:48:00.001+05:452019-04-16T12:56:42.004+05:45Install Debian 9 with RAID 1

Installing vmware tools in Redhat (CentOS)
If you have installed Redhat or CentOS in your virtual machine with the minimal software installing vmware tools require installing ifconfig command
ifconfig command can be found in net-tools package to install it run
# yum install net-tools
Load the vmware-tools CD in the virtual machine, unpack the vmware-distribution folder to the desktop or /tmp folder and then run ./installer.pl file inside the vmware-tools-distrib folder
# mkdir /mnt/cdrom
# mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
# cp /mnt/cdrom/VMwareTools-{version}.tar.gz /tmp/
e.g.
# cp /mnt/cdrom/VMwareTools-9.4.11-2400950.tar.gz /tmp/
# cd /tmp
# tar -zxvf VMwareTools-9.4.11-2400950.tar.gz
# cd vmware-tools-distrib
# ./vmware-install.pl

if you are not a root user, append sudo in your commands
An alternative way to install vmware-tools is install open-vm-tools
# yum install net-tools
# yum install open-vm-tools
start the vmware tools service
# systemctl start vmtoolsd.service

Installing vmware tools in Ubuntu
# sudo apt-get install net-tools
# sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools
# systemctl start vmtoolsd.service

Slack alternative for team chat

Many alternatives on the subject are on mainstream. Among them I have tried Openfire chatserver and Rocket chat. Since our org do not allow us to leave our intranet and slack does not have the in house installation, the above two are the perfect solution, though there are many chatserver that allow the inhouse installation I am not taking considerations that I haven't tested. Though I was tempted to test others like mattermost, discord and others like I am sticking to the formers till they fulfil the clients request.
Openfire and Rocket chat are both open source and free. Openfire can be installed in Windows and Linux both. I haven't tried Rocket chat in Windows Server. Both the installation are straight forward and can be installed in no time and make them running in your intranet. I integrated both of them to the Active Directory for the users authentication.
Openfire is an XMPP server and all XMPP clients readily connects to its server. I used Install4j to create my own branded version of Openfire client Spark. Its VOIP extension easily connects to the asterisk clients to make VOIP calls.
Rocket chat has modern UI. I used its chat bot and channel feature to generate alerts from my NMS LibreNMS. Previously I used Slack with Observium for this feature.

Nepali non-Unicode fonts to Unicode font converter for formatted documents like word, excel, powerpoint

Many online webpages using javascript are available that convert
non-unicode fonts to Unicode fonts for unformatted text that is
copy-pasted into the page. My own online version is available at
Preeti to Unicode
Fontasy to Unicode

But
when it comes to the formatted documents like in word and excel and
with mixed fonts, it becomes difficult to convert using these simple
converters. They remove all the formatting and moreover convert all the
text to the Unicode or vice-versa. They not only convert Preeti or
Kantipur font to Unicode but also the English text to the Unicode making
them unreadable.

Nepali Unicode is installed NOW WHAT

Many of my friends have asked me, "I have installed Nepali Unicode in my computer, now what". They certainly mean they got through all the pains installing nepali unicode in their computer (Really time consuming and lengthy process in Windows XP than newer Windows) now how can they type in Nepali Unicode. As I have already suggested in nepali-script-in-xp if you are new in Nepali typing and had never typed in Nepali either in Preeti, Kantipur or whatever you should go for Nepali Romanized since it is very similar to English typing, But if you have been typing in Preeti, Kantipur like true type fonts you should be comfortable with the traditional layout of the Nepali Unicode.
After installation the first thing is you cannot type in word or excel just by selecting the Nepali Unicode font Mangal or other like selecting Preeti or Kantipur font. You should switch between the input language found in the Language Bar mostly in the notification area beside the date and time of the computer. Alternatively the ALT+SHIFT shortcut can do that work.

It had been 10 years since I had been using the Nepali Unicode and I began with the Traditional layout as I had worked with the Preeti font previously. At that time the UniNepali font was used but had problems especially with the numbers 0 and 1 being interchanged. Mangal has been shipped with the Windows itself and is default font. The only problem it had was it could not show the joined words as we do in writing. The hanging words just do not hang below. Another Unicode font that ships with the Windows is Arial Unicode which can hang some letters.

With the traditional layout the problem was when getting the symbols on writing, you frequently had to change to Nepali to English and English to Nepali to get the symbols. So I gave a try to Romanized Nepali. Then editing in Preeti and Kantipur has been troublesome. There is a solution conversion tools made by MPP in java added with manual corrections.

Typing in Unicode Nepali is like following the Nepali Grammar (Byakaran) and sound. You follow the sound of the words and you get it typed. Learning takes time but fruitful after you have done it and will enjoy the work unlike attaching the symbols and get the words created in Preeti and Kantipur Fonts. This is what we teach our trainees on Nepali Unicode typing and we give several words (really difficult) words to type like राष्ट्रिय, विद्यालय, विद्यार्थी। To begin with you can type various simple words like
nepal, नेपाल,
himal हिमाल,

You will enjoy it, but don't forget to download the Nepali Unicode layout and put it handy.

Choose romanized if you are new to nepali typing romanized layout screenshot. It types k for क, b for ब. nepal for नेपाल, dipes for दिेपेस, yoges for योगेस. It will be fun, try it.

Choose traditional if you are familiar with BA, KA, MA, NA nepali typing like in preeti, kantipur. If you need the keyboard layouts for these true type fonts you can download here. I have included the keyboad layouts for preeti font, kantipur font and fontasy_himali_ tt font. If you need the keyboard layouts for other fonts than mentioned you can request me at my feedback or mail me "dipes at dipes.com.np" or "dipesm at yahoo.com". I will include them in https://www.dipes.com.np/2012/10/nepali-fonts-keyboard-layout.html or in your mail. For now lets keep on installing Nepali Unicode, so here goes the traditional layout screenshot

Benefiting from localized servers in Nepal

Bandwidth has always been the bottle neck for all the Internet users and also the ISP. As a user we all feel slow while browsing the Internet and downloading files. Also as a service provider we have always thrive to fulfill the bandwidth requirement for the clients.
There's NPIX trying to put local traffic local, as a way helping the us a faster way to browse the internet. My Boss always encourage us to use our own email server that we maintain, keeping our traffic within the country, saving the bandwidth and saving our privacy. NPIX has been proud on making its graph 1GB and aiming to 1.5GB bandwidth consumption. (I am also contributing to reach this target watching YouTube :) Kidding).
Since the Google Cache server has been installed in NTC, most of the Google services has been faster than before and as a matter of fact YouTube has been allowed in our premises (Joking). Most of the NTC ADSL users like me has benefited from it especially on YouTube. We can watch the YouTube movies without buffering (of course not always without buffering) but the bandwidth reaches 740kbps while watching and sometimes reach up to 1Mbps (Mind the small bps here). I am using networx freeware program to check my speed all the time. So most of the time I can watch these movies unless brother complains his Internet became slow. But my eyes are always in the networx small bandwidth meter to check the speed, if they do not reach 700+ I avoid those videos, since they hadn't been loaded in Google cache server, that means nobody has viewed them before and not in cache.

I used to hear friends abroad are watching the movies on their devices using YouTube. And I used to guess when we would do that. It had not been long, just 3 years back. And now we are doing the same, though the Internet speed and growth is not as that of friends abroad. However we cannot sit still without thanking this so called cache server (proxy server), but hey we have already disposed the proxy server at our workplace and nobody thinks of restoring it, who cares. I am just a proxy server configurer not the decision maker.
To save bandwidth, we have heard of Akamai servers installed in Nepal and then Ubuntu Local Repository (Repo). I haven't use this Ubuntu Repo, but will be glad to hear CEntOS or Fedora Repo locally hosted in Nepal. However they haven't been highlighted as Ubuntu. Someday we may be shifting to Ubuntu, don't know. But what I haven't heard is the local sites that keep local bandwidth local that doesn't have to cross the border to cost the price. NPIX tells it is trying to keep local traffic local but doesn't say which sites are local. I only know them when the Internet is in problem and the national sites are working fine but not international sites. So as far as I know the ISPs sites are local. Most of the sites that has .np country level domain name but not hosted inside but outside. So they are a little bit slow than others.
Here is the list of some local sites by myself. If you know more, its worth sharing. I am not listing the sites of ISPs here.
I remember when I installed Virtual WiFi in my laptop I got this Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter. This was stubburn to be removed and I once even reinstalled the Operating System. But this time I didn't realized when it got through to the laptop. When it resides I have problem with my Wifi. It does not connect properly or it does not show my wifi AP and also it did not connect to the new Wifi AP only the old APs were able to connect. So I had disabled the Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter from the Network Connections (control panel >> ncpa.cpl). But one with the same problem came and even with disabling this from the network connections I cannot get through. Therefore I had google again and find its solution. Lucky enough I got it in one of the website and worked. http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/155404-right-way-disable-microsoft-virtual-wifi-miniport-adapter.html
I am even going to try this in my laptop. Hope it works in mine too. Yes it worked too and this Microsoft Virtual Miniport adapter vanished from the network connections of control panel.
Running cmd as an administrator and the following commands were issued
"netsh wlan stop hostednetwork"
"netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=disallow"

Change Office Language on MacBook Pro

Change Microsoft Office 2011 Finnish to English Language on MacBook Pro
After the fresh unwrap of MacBook Pro, with the apple id created, I had to install all the necessary software. All the freeware were not a problem to install on it, but the skype. I cannot download skype for mac from the windows computer. I was forced to download the skype from mac itself, after several times I downloaded the skype for mac from windows computer but always redirected to the skype for windows. Copied the links itself from the mac client and pasted to the windows PC, this time too redirected to failure. So gave up and had to download it though the internet in the macbook was slow.
The next big hurdle was the Office package. Most of the users were familiar with the Windows Package rather than other free counterparts like OpenOffice, LibreOffice. The client had the purchased version of Microsoft Office 2011 Home and Student Version 2011. After I finished the installation I found the language of Office 2011 was in Spanish and supported only the Spanish and the Finish language. After googling one of the search told to download a English version of Office 2011 with the same serial key provided. I downloaded the English version of the same with the serial key. Later I found it had costed around 15000 Nepali Rupees. It worked without much pain. I had installed OpenOffice.org for mac as a backup.

As per requirements to test it in windows, finally got hands on WinIDS. Though there is pre packaged solution on snort IDs with its graphical reporting snorby in Security Onion built in Ubuntu Iso, the preference were given to step by step built up and in windows. WinIds was great. But at last gave the Barnyard error in Windows XP. However such error was not present in windows server 2003. The error was while running barnyard in cmd prompt, it just did not want to run. Next thing I tried to run apache and mysql server that of xampp but just can't. So without further delay just installed fresh apache and mysql. So everything went well on testing in windows server 2003 and made it ready for the deployment.
The next task was to run honeypot in windows. I chose honeyd for windows version. This particular was also incompatible with windows xp. "WinHoneyd is NOT compatible with Windows XP SP2. Microsoft recommended solution:server 2003" one of the experts says in "Experts Exchange". So in favor of server 2003, gave up for Windows XP. I will publish further results after testing.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5892376448157171714.post-15914339272890586632012-12-28T15:09:00.000+05:452018-11-04T19:22:43.933+05:453G settings in Nepal Telecom (NTC) for Samsung Galaxy S III

3G settings in Nepal Telecom (NTC) for Samsung Galaxy S III

Samsung Galaxy S3 and another unkown android tablet already activated for NTC 3G were not able to connect to the internet via GPRS or 3G with the settings provided in the NTC site. The proxy settings whether correct or not gave the negative result and also the sms gprs for 1404 would not give the reply sms from the NTC as at the time of 12 - 2.30 PM yesterday. After playing for more than 1 hour the settings however worked for them. First the tablet was connected to the internet through 3G high speed then the S3. The APN setting I used was ntnet. APN name ntnet and APN ntnet. Nothing more than that. The mobile data and data roaming were turned on. After the restart of each device, I was able to browse the internet with the status H (which stands for HSDPA). I really want to note down this before I forget. For more information

Recover saved password from browser

My opera 64bit browser eating up too much ram in my laptop more than 1 GB sometimes making my laptop cry too much with its fan. It would use up too much memory when I was using too many browsers and of course flash plugin may be its cause.

To reduce the noise I decided to install Opera 32bit instead. Installing 32bit Opera only was not enough for me, I had to port all my saved passwords and bookmarks to the new opera.
I had protected my passwords with the master password. I tried to unlock the passwords from the browsers but in vain. So I went for 3rd party tools OperaPassView from nirsoft http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/opera_password_recovery.html. It just showed me the username but not passwords. All the passwords had chinese letters embedded to it. I disabled the master password. However it did not solved my problem. Finally I got a solution which was easy to implement but raised an alarm. Are my passwords really safe with the browsers? Here is the solution.

It works withe opera, chrome and firefox. With the password saved page, click on auto login, as soon as it loads stop the browser from further going in. Then over the passwords right click on it and click on Inspect Element.

Now change the highlighted password field in the code box to "text" or "view" or any other word other than password. The saved password will be visible.

Importing contacts in Nokia 6020

Nokia 6020 when bought 10 years back cost me about 12k and was great at that time with the built-in camera, infrared and most of them the joystick made it very comfortable to use. It was my first mobile that could connect with the computer. It had data cable DKU-5 for the data transfer between the PC and mobile. It's still in use and my mom uses it. Though it lacks the Nepali fonts for her, she uses contacts photo list to dial us and relatives. It is just that great and no other phones had been used so long without problem. The problem with it was, it was dead one day and brother had it fixed with the new T mobile Symbian OS. Everything was fine unless one day most of the contacts were deleted by one of my kids while playing with it.
So I thought of restoring the contacts from my mobile to it. So my first task was getting the contacts from outlook 2010 to the format that Nokia supports, which was of course .vcf file.

Exporting the outlook 2010 contacts to vcard files (.vcf)
Method No. 1

Create a new email message

Click on Attach Item > Business Card > Other Business Cards

Select the contact(s)

The contact(s) will be attached. Select the contact(s) in vcf extensions; drag and drop to the folder or Ctrl+C (copy) and Ctrl+V (paste) to the desired folder.

Method No. 2

Go to contacts section in outlook

Select the contact(s) to export. Click on Forward contact drop down icon > As a Business Card. By default on clicking forward contact the contacts will be attached in .msg files (Outlook Contact). So we need to click on drop down icon in it to select Business Card

The contact(s) will be attached. Select the contact(s) in vcf extensions; drag and drop to the folder or Ctrl+C (copy) and Ctrl+V (paste) to the desired folder.

Now the contacts were ready to be imported to the mobile.

Importing the contacts to Nokia 6020

The mobile was then connected with the computer with the cable so called DKU-5 or CA-42 (Whatever it may be) as I had connected previously but the different PC. The driver was installed and Nokia PC suite installed and updated. But whenever the mobile was connected it said Data Enhancement Connected and then again Enhancement not Supported. So I decided to go for IrDA connection. Then the old Dell Latitude C640 was powered on. Infrared had been disabled in it. So it was enabled from the BIOS settings. The Infrared settings was enabled in the Mobile and then placed near the Infrared reception of the laptop, a shortcut icon on the desktop was created enabling the data exchange between the devices.

Before I finally got the Infrared working on the laptop I downloaded the Infrared driver for it, since it was only disabled from the BIOS the driver was not needed. However the link for the driver is http://drp.su/drivers/notebooks/?v=Dell&m=Latitude%20C640&id=767&l=en, just in case I format the laptop again.
